Foods You Should Avoid With Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic medical condition, but one that can be managed with diet and doctor-recommended treatments. It is important that not only do you eat the right things, but you avoid the wrong things. Here are some foods you should avoid when you have type 2 diabetes.
Excessive Amounts of Sugar
Naturally, you want to be careful with how much sugar you have and the sources of your sugar. You don’t have to cut out sugar completely, but it is good to watch where your sugar comes from. Sugar from natural sources like a moderate amount of fruit is usually fine, but watch out for foods like sugary cereals, candy, donuts, baked goods, and processed foods that are packed with unnecessary sugar. Your favorite blended coffee drinks and fruit juices also have a lot of extra sugar.
Processed Foods
All those processed foods you love to eat because they are convenient are damaging to your blood sugar levels. These are going to pack in the sugar, carbs, fat, and other preservatives. They are bad for you if you are overweight and trying to lose weight, if you need to cut your sugar, and because of all the refined carbs they have. Try to only eat foods found in the perimeter of the grocery store, including meat, seafood, fresh produce, whole grains, and similar options.
Fried and Fatty Foods
With type 2 diabetes, you also need to watch the amount of fat and calories you are consuming. Gaining weight can be dangerous with this form of diabetes, because it worsens the condition and keeps you from being able to manage it properly. This is why when you are overweight, you are already in the risk area for developing diabetes. Try to avoid excessive fatty or fried foods, like cheeseburgers, French fries or onion rings, and anything deep-fried. Go with the baked, broiled, or roasted version of your favorite foods.
Refined Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are okay in lower quantities, but you should try to avoid refined carbohydrates. Think of any white version of foods that also come in a whole wheat or whole grain version. These are usually the refined carbs. So it might include white pasta, white rice, and white bread. You can get brown or whole grain versions of these foods and reduce your carbs while avoiding the refined carbs you should not be consuming.
