Relief for Sore and Itchy Eyes
If you suffer from allergy symptoms, itchy and sore eyes are probably among those symptoms. Pollen allergies like hay fever are often the cause of red, itchy eyes. When exposed to pollen or other allergens, you eyes can actually become so dry and irritated that your vision can become impaired. There are many excellent medications that are designed to help alleviate allergy symptoms like itchy eyes and runny noses.
Some of the most common medications for the relief of allergy symptoms include antihistamines and decongestants. There are also medications designed specifically for eye issues due to allergy symptoms.
Cold Compress
The simplest way to relieve sore and itchy eyes is with a cold compress. You can take a clean wash cloth and run it under cold water to wet the cloth. Once it is thoroughly saturated, wring it so that it does not drip. Place the cloth on a plate in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. Remove the cloth from the refrigerator and place it over your eyes. The compress helps to cool and soothe your eyes while shrinking the actual blood vessels around the eye area. This is also an excellent method to use when trying to escape the itchy eyes brought on by hay fever or pollen allergies. Once your compress begins to warm or dry, simply wet the cloth and place it in the refrigerator again.
Cucumber
Cucumber paste and cucumber slices are also terrific for relieving eye allergy symptoms. You can place a cucumber in the blender and create a paste that has anti-inflammatory properties. Cucumbers have been used for many years to reduce the puffiness around the eye and to soothe red eyes. Simply apply the paste to the area around the eye, carefully avoiding getting cucumber in your eye. If you do not have the time or inclination to create a cucumber paste, you can place slices of cucumber over your eyes. Either way, this natural remedy for itchy and sore eyes is remarkably inexpensive.
Raw Potato
For extremely itchy eyes, chilled raw potato is another wonderful remedy. Simply grate 1/2 of a cold raw potato into fine strips. Place these strips around the eyes and leave them for about thirty minutes. Then, wash the eye area carefully to remove the potatoes. Using potato or cucumber to relieve allergy symptoms is a simple choice because both vegetables cause no unwanted side effects.
Eye Drops
Flushing eyes with saline or using a commercial eye drops can also be effective when used to alleviate eye allergy symptoms. Eye drops can come in several strengths and some are even prescribed by a physician. Be sure to check with your doctor before using any eye solution, especially if you wear contact lenses or glasses.
